Here’s to number 10!

Excellent match. Much kudos to Wigan — Steve Bruce shut the mouths of those who said that they’d kelong — they enjoyed more possession than people would have expected them to, albeit poor finishing let them down.

Good job, Bolton, although a win for Chelsea would have been better salt on the wounds. Heh heh.

And now, onward Moscow…

Sharp hike?

Read it here.

But before everyone starts jumping up at down at the mathematical, policy and ridiculous-ness of it all (some already have) — the newspaper made an error in the article written on Friday.

weekendToday, pg 32 states:

CORRECTION

In the article "Sharp hike in kindergarten fees" (April 25), we reported the example of a parent who would pay $76 more from July for her kindergarten fees at her PAP Community Foundation branch. This is incorrect. Her child’s fees will go up by $20 to $96. We apologise for the error.

Which means that original fees are $76. So hold your horses, y’all.

Ur bun.

Nit-picking. Or scallop-picking, whatever. It disappoints me to no end to read Urban’s article on how celebs, svelte as they are, have ‘unwanted bits’ like ‘turkey necks’, ‘buffalo humps’ and ‘bat wings’.

‘Unwanted’!

How will mere mortals like us ever be satisfied with our own bodies if those screen goddesses can’t live up to ’standards’? Mere mortal’s standards, ironically. What a redundant pursuit of physical perfection. Will they ever realise how impossible all these virtually are? These ‘fashionistas’ seriously don’t know how many insecure lives they’re putting in jeopardy. I have a sneaking feeling that it’s cosmetic surgeons who are putting these words in their mouths. Bah.

Come on, there are much more important things in life than becoming a humanoid bound by superlatives. Please.

Is this true to your family?

The ModestChou sends me a link, declaring that I’m the ‘youngest’, and therefore reckless. This shows how modest he is in his knowledge of me. But I found the article interesting nonetheless, so up here it goes.

The Independent (UK) does a study on family cliches - the oldest, bossy; the middle, wayward (like me); the youngest, impulsive and reckless. Here is an excerpt:

"What kind of a person do you imagine when you think of an eldest child? Do you think of a conscientious, hard-working conformist? A proud brother or sister who shoulders responsibility – with or without encouragement? What if I were to ask you which member of your family is the most extroverted, or the naughtiest? Do you think of your younger sibling? Does the thought of a middle child conjure pictures of a tortured soul, forever torn between two extremes?" […]

This is what Oslo (+10) University’s latest study shows:

"What he found was pretty convincing evidence that it was not the fact of being born first that gave you an intellectual head-start in life; it was the actual role of being the eldest that was important. It was being reared as the eldest, rather than being born the eldest, that mattered."

I disagree with some of the findings though (probably due to cultural differences, but I too hypothesize). Still, it’s a generalisation, so not all of it should be applied to everyone per se.

Take my family for example. I can safely say that even though I’m the middle child, I don’t suffer from the Middle Child Syndrome (MCS). Nor have I as the once-youngest, felt ‘dethroned’, as modern psychologist Alfred Adler calls it. How do I explain this? My brother and I are only a year apart and my sister is six years younger.

My mom told me that the age gaps between the three of us sibilings were planned out. With our close age gap (18 months to be exact), my brother and I were companions, rather than having sibling rivalry like that of a three-year-old (that has learnt emotions and is learning to wield them) jealous of the attention his/her newborn sibling gets. We learnt together and played together, even though my mom did treat us slightly differently because of certain character traits. As for my sister, it was in consideration to the MCS. Which means that by six years old, I’ve had my fair share of being the youngest. I was past the vying-for-attention stage when my sister came along. I became the oldest girl, which is a responsibility.

Why did I become rebellious? It’s because I just liked to question authority and certain rules and ways that just didn’t make sense (then). That’s another story.

But yeah, do read the article - it’s a bit lengthy though - and see if you agree or disagree with it!

Harry in the future.

NOTE: Do NOT read past this line if you don’t want to know what happens to Harry Potter even after the scanty epilogue.

"Brit author J K Rowling reveals the future of Potter stars.

Harry Potter author J K Rowling has revealed what she believes happened to the wizard and his friends after the end of the final book in the series.

Rowling, in a 90-minute web chat, told fans that she thinks Harry was named head of the Auror Department — under the new wizard government headed by Kingsley Shacklebolt.

The Auror Department in the wizard government fights dark wizards. According to the Daily Express, Rowling also revealed to fans that Ginny Weasley, who later married Harry, went on to play for the Holyhead Harpies, the female Quidditch team.

When she left the team to raise their children, James, Albus and Lily, she continued writing as Quidditch correspondent for the Daily Prophet.

Harry’s best friend, Ron Weasley, joined his brother George as a partner in Weasley’s Wizard Wheezes, their joke shop. While his wife Hermione worked in the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures helping poor creatures before joining the magical law enforcement squad.

Ron and Hermione had two kids, Rose and Hugo."

Hallow Spoilers!

Spoiler warning!

Of course, I won’t be so mean as to kill your joy just 2 days after the HP book launch.

(I finished the book on Sunday in 5 hours.)

I’ll just lay some details out here. And all you have to do is to highlight the following with a click and drag of your mouse. Or simply pressing ctrl+A. =)

Go for it. You know you wanna…

  • Who dies?
  • Hedwig, Mad-eye, Dobby, Pettigrew, Snape, Fred Weasley, Lupin, Tonks, Voldemort. Many other Hogwarts students/Death Eaters died in battle too (55 in all, I’m told), but I don’t think you’d really care.

Oh yes, Dumbledore IS dead. He was going to die anyway… Hmm. And he wasn’t that saintly throughout his life, like everyone thought he was. Not when he was still young and rash, that is.

  • Who’s the traitor?
  • Snape. But then again, not him. He betrayed them on purpose – he’s been on Dumbledore’s side all along. Really, all the traitors are basically the Death Eaters that we already know of. Or those who had been under the Cruciatus curse.

  • What are the Deathly Hallows?
  • They are 3 precious items that most believe exist only in fairy tales. But in reality, they do. Harry already has two of them; one which he uses regularly and one that was later given to him. The third is one that Voldemort desires – he thinks that it will enable him to defeat Harry – and eventually obtains.

These 3 precious items combined will enable its owner to control Death, and it has ensued in many bloody wizard fights… And yes. Someone did possess all 3 of them at one point of time, and it is in recent times.

What were the 6 (or is it just 6) Horcruxes? The first was the diary of Tom Riddle, destroyed in the Chamber of Secrets. Dumbledore had destroyed one other, the ring of Marvolo Gaunt. Then it was the Slytherin locket which was found with a bit of help from a creature (hint hint). They also learnt that they can only destroy Horcruxes with the rarest and most lethal weapons (i.e. Gryffindor Sword and Basilisk fangs), which a mysterious doe helped them find…

So the other Horcruxes were 2 somethings that belonged to 2 Hogwarts houses; and Voldemort’s pet snake, Nagini.

But wait, there’s more! Since V had put a bit of himself into Harry in the beginning, Harry himself is a 7th Horcrux…

  • Who gets married to whom?
  • Tonks and Lupin (gave birth to one son — Ted Tonks – before they got killed, and named Harry as godfather). Fleur and Bill, but their wedding was gatecrashed by the Death Eaters. Harry and Ginny. Ron and Hermione.

    1. Okay fine (I’m getting tired). What happened in the end?
V ‘kills’ his soul in HP the first time, then HP showdowns with V. V gets killed because of some big complicated thing that has a bit to do with the Hallows.

19 years later, Harry and Ginny have 3 kids (2 boys, 1 girl); Ron and Hermione have 2 (1 boy, 1 girl).

    Live wire.

"Live Earth is a 24-hour, 7-continent concert series taking place on 7/7/07 that will bring together more than 100 music artists and 2 billion people to trigger a global movement to solve the climate crisis. Live Earth will reach this worldwide audience through an unprecedented global media architecture covering all media platforms - TV, radio, Internet and wireless channels.

Live Earth marks the beginning of a multi-year campaign led by the Alliance for Climate Protection, The Climate Group and other international organizations to drive individuals, corporations and governments to take action to solve global warming. Former U.S. Vice President Al Gore is the Chair of the Alliance and Partner of Live Earth." […]

Well, here’s a simple point to ponder:
Just how much electricity and fuel will they (read: concerts, television audiences etc.) be consuming for the event itself?

    Talk about saving the earth.

    Fire Rainbow.

Better known as a circumhorizontal arc, this fire rainbow hung over northern Idaho on June 3. As a closet lover of all things colourful (read: rainbow spectrum kind), I silently praised God and marvelled at its splendour for quite a while.

Amazing. And amazingly rare, too. Here’s an excerpt:

"The sight occurs only when the sun is very high in the sky (more than 58° above the horizon). What’s more, the hexagonal ice crystals that make up cirrus clouds must be shaped like thick plates with their faces parallel to the ground." […]

    The Wait is Ogre.

Some reviews compared Shrek 3’s plot to "kicking a dead steed", and I pretty much agree. I thought the REALLY cheesy and painful to an extent, but of course – how much can you expect in a land ‘far far away’.

The show does have its saving grace. There are plenty of laughs and quirks which does manage to divert some attention away from the weak plot. (Ironically, it’s likely that the overt focus on humour compromised the storyline.) The animation is fantastic; it’s amazing how technology has improved leaps and bounds. Of course, it’s always for the better when it’s for our pleasure. Ha.

I’ll give it 3 1/2 stars (out of 5). This show’s great for after-work and post-exam stress relief. And don’t bring your brains along, lest you be disappointed.

    About VA and the Media.

(I shall make like a copy writer and copy/paste with permission the AHBENGEMOPEK’s summation of the media furore.)

    Culpable Hand of the Media

The undiscerning media had published the madman’s manifesto and had definitely played into his dead hands. Like the outrage caused by a bombing from an Islamist terrorist, one of Cho’s aim was, doubtless, publicity. And the media had helpfully collaborated with publishing the photos, providing the QuickTime videos, spreading the messages. Was there no consideration for the consequences of their actions?

Was it just a ratings war for the media? Sheer irresponsibility?

This publicity surrounding Cho would one day lead to copycat massacres where one deranged killer tries to outdo the previous one in bodycounts…
